While our fabulous FL gov, Jeb Bush, and his brother, our prez, GW, agree on the importance of preserving FL's unique environment, our dim Dem Leaders here in FL - including US Dem Sen. Bob Graham, and especially Al Gore in 2000 -- never could make that environmental commitment.

Consequently, Gore lost FL votes on this issue to Nader -- and Gore deservedly earned the anger and rath of FL environments and other FL voters. You can read the following article to see how FL environmental protesters, angered by Gore's refusal to protect the Everglades, forced Gore to cancel plans for a campaign rally in FL three weeks before Election 2000:

Collision Course [The real reason Al Gore lost FL in 2000 - forget about Palm Beach and hanging chads]

And, you can read about it here:

The Jeb Bush Nobody Knows - Part 8: Why Some FL Dem Voters May "Never Forget" -- and, vote for Jeb

BTW, here's a recent post from the above Jeb thread:

Probably fuming that the GOP is taking the lead on protecting the environment. Ms. Reno's homebuilt house and red truck can not compete with this.

I have always believed that it is ultimatly up to the state to regulate land issues. Although I usually take a laissez faire attitude to development, I think it is important to preserve land for the enjoyment of the local population and to minimize the ugliness that comes with sprawl. Considerable improvement to Florida's State Park System has been noticeable in the past few years. Incredible, considering the fact that State Parks in Florida ARE NOT financed by an income tax (which we don't have) or the sales tax. Instead, they are funded by the "stamp tax" that accompanies incorporations, building permits and the like. The rest of the money is raised from the private sector.

That being said, Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve are gems of the National Park System. I will be going hiking in Big Cypress tomorrow!

I bet that truck pollutes as much as an SUV.
